چکیده

While techniques exist for simulating swarming behaviors, these methods usually provide only simplistic navigation and planning capabilities. In this review, we explore the benefits of integrating roadmap-based path planning methods with flocking techniques to achieve different behaviors. We show how group behaviors such as exploring can be facilitated by using dynamic roadmaps (e.g., modifying edge weights) as an implicit means of communication between flock members. Extending ideas from cognitive modeling, we embed behavior rules in individual flock members and in the roadmap. These behavior rules enable the flock members to modify their actions based on their current location and state. We propose new techniques for several distinct group behaviors: homing, exploring (covering and goal searching), passing through narrow areas and shepherding. We present results that show that our methods provide significant improvement over methods that utilize purely local knowledge and moreover, that we achieve performance approaching that which could be obtained by an ideal method that has complete global knowledge. Animations of these behaviors can be viewed on our webpages.

Adaptive Strategies for Probabilistic Roadmap Construction

This paper presents an experimental study of prospects for using adaptable local search techniques in probabilistic roadmap based motion planning. The classical PRM approach uses a single fast and simple local planner to build a network representation of the configuration space. Advanced PRM planners utilize heuristic sampling techniques and combine multiple local planners. The planner describe...

Sampling and node adding in probabilistic roadmap planners

The probabilistic roadmap approach is one of the leading motion planning techniques. Over the past decade the technique has been studied by many different researchers. This has led to a large number of variants of the approach, each with its own merits. It is difficult to compare the different techniques because they were tested on different types of scenes, using different underlying libraries...

Sampling Techniques for Probabilistic Roadmap Planners

The probabilistic roadmap approach is a commonly used motion planning technique. A crucial ingredient of the approach is a sampling algorithm that samples the configuration space of the moving object for free configurations. Over the past decade many sampling techniques have been proposed. It is difficult to compare the different techniques because they were tested on different types of scenes,...

Motion Planning for Camera Movements in Virtual Environments

When users navigate through a virtual environment they often directly control the camera. Such direct control is difficult for inexperienced users and results in rather ugly camera motions that easily lead to motion sickness. In this paper we describe a new technique for automatic generation of camera motion using motion planning techniques from robotics. In this approach the user simply specif...
